DAY 1
ARRIVE ZANZIBAR
You'll be personally met when you arrive
Zanzibar and taken to Stone Town's best hotel, the Zanzibar
Serena Inn. Activities are available for those who arrive
early.
DAY 2
ZANZIBAR
Take a colorful guided walking tour of Stone
Town, where so much of East Africa's history began and was
controlled for nearly a thousand years! See the Arab monuments,
the old slave market, as well as today's vibrant city and
spice markets. Enjoy a traditional Zanzibari meal. Overnight
at the Serena Inn.
DAY 3
ZANZIBAR/SELOUS
Quick morning flight over Africa's largest
delta into The Selous. Africa's largest game park (22,000
sq. miles) is one of its wildest, composed of ever changing
water courses, marshes and enormous tracks of harsh bush and
sandy plains. Most visitors to this wild section of central
Tanzania fly from place to place, but when you arrive, today,
a special Hoopoe safari vehicle and driver/guide will meet
you and stay with you for the entire expedition here. You'll
travel fantastic paths into this little visited part of Africa
that few visitors see. Two nights in a small, private luxury
camp.
DAY 4
SELOUS
Game viewing in The Selous is by vehicle, foot and by boat.
Elephants, giraffe, buffalo, a great variety of antelope and
rare game like sable and wild dog is regularly seen.
DAY 5
SELOUS/ULUGURU MOUNTAINS/MIKUMI
Leave early for the magnificent drive over the spectacular
Uluguru Mountains onto the central Tanzanian plateau. Outstanding
scenery to the important town of Morogoro where you enjoy
lunch. It's then a quick drive along good roads into Mikumi
National Park for an overnight at the famous "Fox Lodge".
DAY 6
MIKUMI (UDZUNGWA)
Mikumi is an interesting although rather small national
park with exciting game. Today, you can opt to explore the
park on game drives, or take a day-trip to the fabulous Udzungwa
National Park, a striking highland forest only recently explored.
A number of unusual primates, including the red colobus and
Sangey Mangabey are found here. There are no roads, and the
relatively steep climb into the park is challenging. Overnight
at "Fox Lodge" in Mikumi.
DAY 7
MIKUMI/IRINGA/RUAHA
One of Africa's most stunning drives occurs this morning
as the new paved road weaves through unpopulated and mountainous
areas of central Tanzania. The density of baobab is unbelievable.
Lunch is taken at the important central city of Iringa with
time to explore the little museum commemorating African's
struggles against the German colonists. Continue in the afternoon
into one of the most fabulous parks in Tanzania. Two nights
at the "Fox Lodge" in Ruaha, beautifully situated
along the Great Ruaha River.
DAY 8
RUAHA
This marvelous, huge park is composed of a series of great
sand rivers that plow through dense woodland with wide sand
embankments. It's particularly famous for its elephant, but
the amount of all types of game is impressive, and rarer game
like kudu is as common as gazelle in the north.
DAY 9
RUAHA/DAR-es-SALAAM
After a final morning of game viewing, fly back to Dar-es-Salaam,
arriving in the afternoon. Accommodations are included tonight
at a seaside hotel.
